The 39th Annual Gulf Coast Region Conference was held in Houston, Texas March 28-30, 2013 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, hosted by the Alpha Beta Sigma Chapter. Themed, “Changing Lives Through Service. A BLUEPrint for the Next 100 Years.” Our Inter-National President Jimmy Hammock brought greetings and shared with us the duration of the conference. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Grand Basileus, Mary Breaux Wright, Southern Regional Director, Kay Jones Rosebure, and other sisters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., partook in conference activities. It was successful in so many ways.

  • Attendance surpassed expectations including over 200 collegiate and alumni brothers and guests registered for events, workshops and forums.
  • Approximately 70 percent of active chapters in Gulf Coast were represented at conference.
  • Collegiate brothers took advantage of The Suit Initiative, where alumni brothers donated gently used suits, business attire and accessories to collegiate attending the conference.
  • General Session and workshops had increased attendance.

Honorable Judge Michael Guidry of the Louisiana Court of Appeals gave a motivational talk at the DSC/Scholarship luncheon. He charged the brothers to continue to strive in our motto of “Culture for Service”, devote ourselves to our community, and build on our strong foundation. Three - $1000 scholarships were awarded to high school and college students – two from the Houston area.

Iota Tau Chapter of Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge dominated and reigned over the Pageant and Step Show. Taara King, the representative for Iota Tau, was crowned Miss Gulf Coast during the Pageant on Friday, March 29. Her court was completed by representatives 1st Runner-up Miss Nicole Shaw (Zeta Beta Chapter of North Texas), and 2nd Runner-up Miss Miracle Edison (Zeta Zeta Chapter of Univ. of Houston.) Iota Tau unanimously claimed the title of 2013 Step Show winners. Iota Tau and Miss Taara King will represent the Gulf Coast Region at the 2013 National Conclave in Philadelphia, PA.

Along with those break through moments, The Gulf Coast witnessed the change of leadership. Bro. Theartis Ammons was elected and sworn in as the new Director of the Gulf Coast Region. Former Director Thomas Edwards was celebrated with a Director’s Reception held at the prestigious Phil & Derek’s Wine Bar. He was greeted and received well-wishes from Regional Directors of other Regions in Phi Beta Sigma, and other officials. Live entertainment was provided by Houston’s own Joe Carmouche.

Our goal was to ensure all had a memorable experience at the conference. Based on activities planned, attendance by representatives from Pan-Hellenic chapters, and growing presence of our Blue & White family, we accomplished the goal. As we look back at the conference and move forward into our Centennial, Alpha Beta Sigma strives to improve on its standards of Brotherhood, Scholarship and Service.
